Two more Texas screwworm infections found in animals far apart, USDA says
- Two more New World screwworm cases were confirmed in Texas — a calf and a dog in La Salle and Andrews counties — bringing the total to four.
- The fly’s larvae eat live flesh and can infest cattle, wildlife, pets and occasionally people, making it a serious threat to the U.S. cattle industry after reappearing from Mexico (it was eradicated in the 1960s).
- The USDA is fighting it with a sterile‑male release program, ramping up production abroad and building a fly‑rearing facility in Texas to try to halt the outbreak.
