Carney pushes idea of making Canada 'associate member' of EU, WSJ reports

Canada’s PM Mark Carney is exploring a new “associate member” status with the EU to deepen ties between the country and the bloc.
The push — driven in part by a trade war with the U.S. — would free movement of goods, services and workers in strategic areas (energy, AI, defence, critical minerals) and includes joint infrastructure plans like undersea cables, data centres and new satellite networks.
The idea faces political hurdles: the EU has been cautious about membership rules, and previous Canada-EU deals still haven’t been ratified by all member states.
