India’s power demand is surging, but some solar energy is going to waste

India curtailed nearly 11 TWh of solar in 15 months — enough to power about 10 million homes — even as heat waves drove up electricity demand.
The main problem: congested transmission (much solar is concentrated in western states) and inflexible coal plants that can’t ramp down quickly.
Experts say faster roll-out of batteries, more transmission lines and a more flexible grid are needed as India races to ~500 GW of clean capacity by 2030.
