Meteor as heavy as an elephant causes widespread speculation across New England

NASA says the loud double boom was a meteor about 5 feet wide and as heavy as an elephant, slamming into the atmosphere at ~42,000 mph and releasing energy equal to about 230 tons of TNT.
It broke up miles above New England and fell into Cape Cod Bay — people from Massachusetts to Montreal reported hearing/feeling it, with pets fleeing and neighbors pouring into the streets.
Officials confirmed it was natural (not space junk) and noted meteors are common but usually go unnoticed when they occur over oceans or in daylight.
