Bolivia’s president declares state of emergency over blockade crisis

Bolivia’s president Rodrigo Paz declared a nationwide state of emergency and authorized the military and police to restore order after weeks of anti-government protests demanding his resignation.
Road blockades led by unions, farmers and supporters of former president Evo Morales have caused food, fuel and medical shortages and effectively stalled parts of the economy.
The unrest began after Paz cut long-standing fuel subsidies amid a deep economic crisis—soaring inflation, scarce foreign currency and falling gas exports—and protesters are also calling for wage increases and an end to supply shortages.
