American marine biologist and conservationist shot dead in the Philippines

Kent Carpenter, a 73-year-old American marine biologist, was shot dead in his home in Sibulan, Negros Oriental; his Filipina companion was injured and thieves took a laptop, cash and a backpack.
He was a respected researcher and lecturer (Old Dominion University, long collaboration with Silliman University) known for pioneering work on Philippine marine biodiversity and warnings about coral-reef collapse from warming.
Police are investigating the motive and attackers and say the case is being treated with utmost urgency.
