Bangladesh could consider joining Mecca pact, in test for foreign ties

Bangladesh is weighing joining the new Mecca security pact (Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan) after a Saudi invitation and positive comments from a junior foreign minister.
The move could further strain ties with India—already tense over the extradition of ex‑PM Sheikh Hasina—and make Dhaka appear to be choosing sides.
Analysts say joining would test Bangladesh’s long‑standing nonaligned stance and could put its trade and remittance‑dependent economy at diplomatic risk with partners like China, the US and Gulf states.
