New Jersey is set to charge companies with workers on Medicaid. Other states may follow

New Jersey just approved a new fee on employers with 50+ workers on Medicaid, charging $325–$725 per Medicaid-covered person and expected to raise about $145 million this year.
Several other states — notably California, Connecticut, Colorado, Oregon and Washington — are debating similar employer charges or studies of options.
Supporters call it a fairness and revenue fix as federal changes raise Medicaid costs; critics (business groups and some progressive analysts) warn it could penalize employers, hurt hiring of low‑income workers and discourage Medicaid enrollment.
