New transmission from animals likely caused Congo-Uganda Ebola outbreak, study says

Scientists say the current Ebola cases are a previously unseen variant of the Bundibugyo species, likely from a new animal-to-human spillover.
Genetic testing tied cases in Uganda to the Congo outbreak and showed the strain is distinct from Bundibugyo viruses seen in 2007 and 2012.
Since the May 15 declaration the outbreak has topped ~4,381 confirmed cases and 2,000+ deaths, and there’s no approved vaccine for this strain yet.
