Europe's summer drought threatens fish in rivers, lakes and farms

Severe drought and scorching heat have shrunk parts of the Danube and other waterways, leaving boats on cracked ground and fish trapped in shallow, 30°C-plus ponds.
Fish farms across Central and Eastern Europe are seeing heavy losses — Hungary reported nearly 280 metric tons of dead fish and roughly $4.2 million in damage — and restocking could take years.
Emergency measures range from pumping millions of liters into threatened lakes to moving fish or adding liquid oxygen, but producers say longer-term water-retention plans are needed.
