$1.1 billion from Nike co-founder will build Oregon’s first women’s hospital

Phil and Penny Knight committed $1.1 billion to build Oregon’s first hospital dedicated to women’s health and to expand cardiovascular care and research at Providence St. Vincent/Heart Institute.
The gift boosts the couple’s lifetime giving to more than $9 billion, after huge prior donations to OHSU, the University of Oregon and Stanford.
The donation comes as hospitals see more pregnant patients with chronic conditions and face funding shortfalls, underscoring how big philanthropy is stepping in to fill gaps in health care.
