Zambians warned not to eat dead wildlife after anthrax kills dozens of animals

Dozens of wild animals — including 46 hippos, eight elephants, five buffalo and a crocodile — have died in Muchinga province after an anthrax outbreak.
Local people who ate the carcasses have so far infected 12 people; there have been no human deaths and those affected are receiving treatment.
Authorities have suspended hunting in the area and warned the public not to eat, sell or handle animals that die suddenly, noting anthrax spores can persist in soil and the disease is endemic in Zambia.
