Guyanese soldier wounded in border gunfight with armed men in Venezuela

A Guyanese soldier was wounded after a patrol vessel came under fire on the Cuyuni River along the Venezuela border.
The clash ties into a long-running dispute over Venezuela’s claim to about two‑thirds of Guyana (Essequibo), a resource‑rich area near offshore oil fields producing roughly 900,000 barrels a day.
Both countries just argued the case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague; Venezuela accuses Guyana of fabricating the incident and says the dispute should be settled politically.
