FCC chair Brendan Carr said Ted Cruz’s appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay didn’t trigger equal‑time rules because those rules apply to broadcast TV, not cable — and Cruz isn’t a current candidate anyway.
The FCC recently warned ABC over Jimmy Kimmel’s interview with a Democratic Senate candidate, prompting Kimmel to post the interview on YouTube instead of airing it on broadcast TV.
Earlier this year the FCC removed daytime and late‑night talk shows’ “bona fide news” exemption, a change that’s raised new questions about how networks handle candidate interviews.
