Portugal and Austria defeat Germany for seats on the UN Security Council

Portugal and Austria beat Germany to win two rotating seats on the U.N. Security Council — Austria called it the capstone of a 15-year campaign.
Kyrgyzstan won its first-ever seat, defeating the Philippines after four ballots and will join the council next year.
Zimbabwe and Trinidad and Tobago were elected unopposed; all five new members take their seats Jan. 1.
