Fewer Americans see US as exceptional ahead of 250th birthday: Survey

  • Fewer Americans now call the U.S. exceptional: 44% say it's “one of the greatest” and only about one-quarter say it “stands above” other nations as the country nears 250 years.
  • Big generational split — only ~51% of 18–29-year-olds say democracy is very/extremely important to U.S. identity (vs. 81% of those 60+), and younger people are less likely to see the American Dream as central (58% vs. 79% of those 60+).
  • Few say the American Dream still holds true (34%); 51% say it once did but doesn’t anymore, and Republicans (57%) are much more likely than Democrats (17%) to say it still does.
