Eastern Washington wildfire forces evacuations and destroys homes

High winds drove a wildfire into an eastern Washington neighborhood near Spokane, forcing about 1,500 people to evacuate and destroying some homes.
The blaze quickly grew to roughly 225 acres, was about 10% contained, and threatened a school, power lines, parks and businesses.
FEMA approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant (the first for Washington this season) as officials note U.S. wildfire activity this year is well above the 10‑year average.
