Indonesian shipwreck survivor saw vessel capsize in minutes then waited 10 hours for rescue

  • A waiter on the Virgo Transport 8 woke to the ferry listing, saw 3–4m waves, and said the ship capsized in under 10 minutes — he and friends clung to a 12kg gas cylinder and floated for about 10 hours before being rescued.

  • The ferry was on a ~20-hour trip from Surabaya to Banjarmasin and was later found inverted about 80 nautical miles from the destination; the survivor says he’s traumatised and won’t work at sea again.
