1,000 Yards A Game: West Virginia’s Shootouts Are College Football’s Weirdest

West Virginia has been in four straight 1,000+ combined-yard shootouts — highlighted by a 1,220-yard game vs. Cincinnati (most in FBS this season) — yet is just 1-3 over that stretch.
The defense has been brutal, allowing 484 yards and 310 passing yards per game; DC Zac Alley called it “the worst defense in college football” and Rich Rodriguez says the unit has “no identity.”
Offense is electric — QB Mike Hawkins Jr. leads QBs with 14 rushing TDs and is third in total offense — but Saturday’s trip to TCU’s elite defense will be a real measuring stick.
