Italian PM Meloni's party proposes swift deportation of foreign offenders

Italy’s right-wing government has proposed a bill to deport non‑EU nationals sentenced to more than one year in prison and to broaden grounds for revoking citizenship for some foreign‑born offenders.
Deportations would rely on bilateral agreements, offer only limited legal challenges (e.g., risk of torture or death penalty), and bar repatriated prisoners from returning to Italy.
The move comes ahead of next year’s election, as Brothers of Italy and the League face pressure from a rising far‑right, anti‑immigration rival.
