Trump pushes Senate to vote on permanent daylight saving time bill ‘as soon as possible’

President Trump is pushing the Senate to pass the Sunshine Protection Act to make daylight saving time permanent, saying more evening sun is “better (including for fighting crime!)” and avoids the disruption of clock changes.
Several Senate Republicans oppose it, arguing permanent DST would push winter sunrises very late in northern states; critics also recall a 1973 experiment that was repealed after predawn accidents.
The House approved the bill, but the Senate — out until Sept. 14 — hasn’t committed to a vote and it’s unclear there are 60 votes to overcome a filibuster; Arizona and Hawaii already don’t change clocks.
