China arrests US scholar suspected of spying

A US scholar, U Min Zin, was reportedly arrested at Kunming airport in early June and China has accused him of spying and endangering national security.
The detention is unusual for a US citizen and comes right after President Trump’s visit to Beijing and ahead of a planned visit by Myanmar’s leader, highlighting sensitive China–US–Myanmar ties.
Min Zin is a well-known Myanmar expert and former student activist (director at a Myanmar-focused think tank and a UC Berkeley PhD student); his family is worried and the US consulate is involved.
