Current Ebola outbreak worst ever in DR Congo, WHO says

  • WHO says this is DRC’s biggest Ebola outbreak — 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths (about 44% fatality) since 15 May 2026, surpassing the 2018–20 outbreak.
  • The outbreak is intensifying around Ituri province and is being worsened by insecurity, displacement and cross‑border movement; cases have also been reported in Uganda (20) and one in France, with some patients treated in Germany.
  • There’s no approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain yet, but experimental vaccines are being developed or trialed in Singapore and the UK (Singapore’s candidate looks most promising).
