South Africa seeks reimbursement from African countries for migrant repatriations

South Africa says it spent nearly $18 million housing and transporting tens of thousands of repatriated or deported migrants and has asked Malawi, Ethiopia and Nigeria to reimburse those costs.
Pretoria reports about 82,875 people have been repatriated or deported, while migrant-origin governments estimate the total at roughly 178,000.
The expulsions follow protests and attacks blaming migrants for economic strain, and authorities say they’ve arrested roughly 60,000 people for being in the country illegally.
