Hurricane Karina rapidly strengthened into a Category 3 major storm over far-off Pacific waters but is moving away from land.
Karina, about 960 miles west-southwest of Baja California, could intensify further and is expected to send dangerous surf and rip currents to parts of southwest Mexico and the Baja coast.
Tropical Storm Lowell, roughly 985 miles east-southeast of Hilo, could become a hurricane soon but currently poses no immediate threat to land.
