Africa CDC chief says the continent needs to invest its own funds in Ebola response, vaccine
- A major Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda has killed more than 200 people with 894 confirmed cases and some 35,000 contacts — made harder to control because the circulating Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine.
- Africa CDC is urging African governments to finance local vaccine and medicine development so the continent stops relying on outside partners; Africa currently produces under 1% of the vaccines it needs.
- African governments have pledged roughly $80 million to a new African Epidemic Fund and donors about $910 million in total, and leaders (including South Africa’s president) are traveling to the region to rally support.
