So you think you caught cyclospora, the diarrhea-causing parasite. Here’s what to do next

  • Taco Bell shredded iceberg lettuce from a Taylor Farms supplier has been linked to a cyclospora outbreak that has sickened thousands (Michigan alone >5,000) and led to reports in about 34 states.
  • Cyclospora causes frequent, watery diarrhea that can start 2–14 days after exposure and linger for weeks — the biggest risk is dehydration, so see a doctor if symptoms last several days or get severe.
  • The parasite is usually spread through contaminated food (not easily person-to-person); diagnosis needs stool testing and treatment is typically with antibiotics, though testing and access to the right medicine can take time.
