At flood-destroyed border, China teams scour ruins of once-busy port

A glacier collapse-triggered mudslide has killed over 1,300 people and left thousands missing; on the Chinese side officials list 43 confirmed dead and 519 still unaccounted for.
The Gyirong border crossing was virtually wiped out—no trace of the five‑storey customs building remains—and rescue teams are digging through the grey mud with excavators, shovels and ground‑penetrating radar.
Hundreds of foreigners, including many Hindu pilgrims heading to Mount Kailash, are among the missing, and families are pressing for more DNA, video and identification information from Chinese authorities.
