Protect College Sports Act: What It Is And What It Means

A bipartisan Protect College Sports Act — led by Sens. Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz — would impose federal rules on transfers, conference moves and NCAA oversight to bring order to the recent wild changes in college sports.
The biggest fight is over conference realignment rules (how long a school must stay independent if it leaves and caps on membership), a provision that’s already been softened and ties into upcoming TV contract expirations.
The bill just cleared a major Senate procedural hurdle (74-26 cloture vote) but still needs more votes and faces a tight timeline and tougher prospects in the House.
