One dead, 102 rescued from Indonesian ferry that went missing in Java Sea

One person has died and 102 people have been rescued from the Virgo Transport 8 after it lost contact in bad weather; 243 people were aboard and the search for the remaining passengers is ongoing.
The ferry was en route from Surabaya to Banjarmasin and was last reported about 150 km south of Banjarmasin; a search-and-rescue ship, a helicopter and nearby vessels have been deployed.
The incident follows a recent deadly ferry fire off Madura and highlights how common — and sometimes risky — ferry travel is across Indonesia’s 17,000+ islands.
