- Two former NC State quarterbacks — Phillip Rivers and Russell Wilson — have emerged as candidates for the Wolfpack’s vacant head coaching job; Rivers was reported as a target and Wilson was interviewed by NC State.
- Wilson is an NC State alum and Super Bowl winner turned broadcaster with no coaching résumé, while Rivers has some hands-on coaching experience (coaches his son at the high-school level) and a long NFL pedigree — both would be program icons.
- NC State recently fired 14-year coach Dave Doeren, interim Todd Goebbel opened with a 31–10 win, and the school is conducting a national search that could pit two former Wolfpack QBs against each other.
