Niger becomes the third country to leave the International Criminal Court

Niger formally notified the UN that it’s leaving the International Criminal Court, calling the ICC “misused” and triggering a 12‑month withdrawal process.
The exit won’t affect the court’s jurisdiction over crimes committed before the withdrawal and the ICC said it regretted the decision; Mali and Burkina Faso have made similar moves.
The move follows a 2023 coup that brought a junta to power, growing ties with Russia, and rising violence in the Sahel — including deadly attacks on Niamey’s airport.
