Speedboat driver in fatal New York Harbor capsizing was in the US illegally, authorities say

A speedboat capsized during a Statue of Liberty tour, drowning an infant and her mother; the pilot now faces federal criminal charges.
Investigators say the vessel was overcrowded, illegally chartered, lacked child life jackets and the pilot wasn’t U.S. Coast Guard–licensed.
The pilot was arrested by immigration authorities for entering the U.S. illegally in 2007; the tour had been organized through Zeus Luxury Rental, a company linked to prior incidents.
