'My stepmum killed my sister and made me lie about it but now we have justice'

After nearly half a century, Desmond Bernard told police his stepmother, Janice Nix, caused the 1978 scalding death of his five‑year‑old sister Andrea — Nix was convicted in 2025.
Bernard lived with abuse, fear and lifelong guilt but, with family support and therapy, he finally spoke out and says he now feels some relief that justice was done.
Nix later became a notorious drug dealer, briefly worked as a probation officer and published a memoir claiming redemption — a claim Bernard rejects.
