- A cyclospora outbreak is rising across the U.S., now reported in 31 states and centered in Michigan (with notable increases also in Ohio and New York).
- The parasite is usually spread through contaminated fresh produce (past links include bagged salads, cilantro, basil, raspberries and green onions) — wash produce, consider buying whole heads of lettuce, and cook when possible.
- It causes diarrhea, nausea and other GI symptoms that can last weeks; vulnerable people may need treatment (commonly the antibiotic Bactrim) and some cases have required hospitalization.
