Britain detains sanctioned oil tanker believed to be linked to Russia’s shadow fleet

Britain boarded and detained the tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel, suspecting it of moving Russian oil in violation of sanctions.
Authorities say it’s the first UK-led operation of its kind, carried out in close coordination with France, and the ship will be held off England’s south coast for investigation.
The move targets Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” that evades sanctions and is meant to curb resources fueling the war in Ukraine.
