Italy extends border controls on visitors from Spain as migration feud continues

Italy and Spain extended their tit-for-tat border checks for another 15 days after a mass migrant influx into Spain’s Ceuta, with Rome citing security and terror risks for random checks at airports and seaports.
The Ceuta episode saw more than 72,000 people cross, reports of 140+ deaths and about 5,000 still stranded — a humanitarian crisis that has become a political headache for Spain’s PM Pedro Sánchez, whose recent amnesty drew over 1 million applicants.
The EU’s Schengen rules allow temporary reintroduction of internal border controls for serious threats, but say such measures should be exceptional, time-limited and a last resort.
