Calls to halt cycle bridge plan in Roman village

Council plans to turn Dilston Bridge (Grade II) from two lanes to one, add traffic lights and a dedicated cycle lane as part of a Hexham–Corbridge active travel route funded by the Levelling Up Fund.
Locals fear the changes will "urbanise" the picturesque hamlet, create traffic bottlenecks and harm tourism and the bridge's historic character, and are demanding a heritage consultation.
The council says the bridge structure won't be altered so listed‑building consent isn't required, and that the scheme will improve access, public health and sustainable travel.
