Woman, 86, 'thanked' driver seconds before fatal crash

Maureen Sanderson, 86, was fatally struck in Aspley, Nottingham, after she raised a hand to thank a driver at a car-park junction and was hit seconds later; she died two days afterwards.
Driver Tracie Spowage, 58, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and was given a 10-month jail term suspended for 12 months, an 18-month driving disqualification, 30 rehab sessions and a six-month night curfew.
The family described Sanderson as a “strong lady with a zest for life,” and the judge said she was entitled to cross the road and the driver failed to keep a proper lookout.
